Your London Family Summer Sorted: Days Out, Big Shows and Hands-On Adventures
WHAT'S ONTRAVEL
With the summer holidays just around the corner, you’ll find that London is already buzzing with family-friendly festivals, theatre shows, outdoor experiences and hands-on activities designed to keep children engaged all season long.
From major cultural highlights to brand-new attractions, there’s a lot waiting for you and your family to explore across the capital.
One of the biggest entertainment stories right now is the news that Paddington: The Musical will head to Broadway in 2027 after its success in the West End. The good news is that if you’re in the UK, you’ll still be able to catch it in London, so fans of the much-loved bear won’t miss out on seeing it closer to home.
Meanwhile, north London is set for a major change. Plans have been approved for a £1 billion film and TV district in Camden, which is expected to become a major hub for the UK’s screen industry. Construction is due to begin in 2027, and over time it could reshape the area into a thriving creative centre with new opportunities for local businesses.
If fresh air and water are more your thing, Canary Wharf is introducing something unusual: London’s first floating lido at Eden Dock. You’ll be able to swim in a 50-metre open-air pool that’s set to operate year-round, even in unheated water. It’s likely to become a favourite spot if you enjoy outdoor or open-water swimming.
A Day of Dance for the Whole Family
One standout event this summer is Family Dance Day at Coram’s Fields on 18 July. If you go, you’ll find a free, lively programme designed especially for children under 12 and their families.
You can expect performances inspired by giant insects, imaginative storytelling drawn from children’s books, and high-energy shows mixing circus skills, martial arts and physical theatre. Your children can also join in with storytelling sessions and dance workshops throughout the day.
Theatre, Festivals and Outdoor Adventures
If you’re planning cultural days out, you’ll have plenty to choose from.
West End Live returns to Trafalgar Square, where you can watch free performances from some of the biggest West End shows. If outdoor theatre is more your style, you can head to Fulham Palace for a family-friendly version of The Jungle Book, or catch productions like Toto the Ninja Cat, Rapunzel and Puss in Boots at venues across the city.
If you love film, you can enjoy an outdoor sing-along screening of Encanto at Kew Gardens, while the classic silent film Safety Last! gets a live musical accompaniment at the Barbican Centre.
Music fans aren’t left out either. The Aurora Orchestra’s performance of Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony lets you sit right among the musicians, giving you and your family a rare, immersive concert experience.
Hands-On Family Activities
Many of London’s museums and galleries are also putting on special summer programmes.
At the Museum of the Home, you can join creative workshops inspired by traditional folk art during the summer solstice. Over at Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Summer Family Festival brings together art, nature and outdoor crafts in a full day of activities.
At the V&A, you’ll be able to explore what lies beneath your feet through interactive workshops focused on soil, roots and fungi. Meanwhile, the Horniman Museum offers close-up encounters with natural history specimens while its main gallery is being refurbished.
Younger children can enjoy sensory play, storytelling and bubble-themed science shows at places like the Discover Children’s Story Centre and the Science Museum.
Something for Every Interest
If your family loves animals, you can explore the Disney The Lion King exhibition at London Zoo. If reading is more your thing, the London Children’s Literature Festival in Barnes offers plenty to dive into. And if skate culture interests you, the Southbank Centre’s Skate 50 exhibition takes you through five decades of skateboarding history.
Elsewhere, Hampton Court Palace offers traditional horse-drawn carriage rides through its historic grounds, while community events like the Greenwich Village Summer Fair give you affordable days out with games, crafts and live entertainment.
Whether you’re after outdoor adventures, creative workshops, theatre or cultural experiences, summer in London gives you plenty of ways to fill your calendar. With many events free or low-cost, it’s a great time to get out and explore the city with your family.
