When a new baby arrives, the world naturally turns its full attention to the little one. There are gifts to open, sweet tiny toes to admire, and milestone charts tracking every single feed and nap. Yet, alongside the arrival of a newborn, another huge birth takes place that rarely gets the same spotlight: the birth of a mum.

This emotional, physical, and mental transformation has a name: matrescence. First coined in the 1970s by anthropologist Dana Raphael, the term is finally making its way into mainstream conversations, giving women everywhere a vocabulary for the wild, beautiful, and sometimes overwhelming journey of becoming a mother.

Think Adolescence, But for Motherhood

The simplest way to picture matrescence is to compare it to adolescence. Think back to your teenage years: your body was changing rapidly, hormones were flying everywhere, and you were trying to figure out who you were in the world.

Becoming a mum is remarkably similar, except it happens almost overnight.

  • The Physical Shift: Your body goes through massive changes during pregnancy and birth, followed by a sudden rollercoaster of post-birth hormones.

  • The Brain Rewire: Science actually shows that pregnancy physically alters brain structure to dial up empathy and protective instincts, helping you tune into your baby's needs.

  • The Identity Shuffle: You are suddenly balancing your old self—your career, independence, hobbies, and relationships—with this brand-new, round-the-clock role.

Giving Yourself Some Grace

Society often tells us that "maternal instinct" should instantly kick in the second we hold our baby, complete with glowing happiness. While the love is undeniable, it is also completely normal to feel confused, tearful, or even a little nostalgic for your old life.

Feeling overwhelmed does not mean you are doing a bad job or that you do not love your baby. It simply means you are growing into a completely new version of yourself.

A Gentle Reminder: Matrescence is a process, not an overnight switch. Just as a baby takes time to learn to walk, you are allowed time to learn how to be a mum.

Why Talking About Matrescence Changes Everything

When we give this transition a name, the pressure lifts. Instead of wondering why you might feel disoriented or guilty on a random Tuesday afternoon, you can recognise it for what it truly is: a major life milestone.

By sharing our stories, talking openly with friends over a cup of tea, and dropping the myth of the "perfect, effortless mum", we create a much kinder space for parents. So, if you are currently navigating those early days or months, take a deep breath. You are doing a brilliant job, and you are growing right alongside your little one.
