The Palace of Holyroodhouse Unveils Festive Decorations as Christmas Season Begins
WHAT'S ONTRAVEL

The Palace of Holyroodhouse has opened its doors for the festive season, with visitors now able to see the State Apartments transformed with Christmas trees, garlands and an elaborate seasonal table display.
This year’s decorations coincide with the centenary of King George V’s decision to open the State Apartments to the public, giving visitors the chance to explore the 17th-century rooms that form the monarch’s official residence in Scotland.
Among the highlights are two 12-foot Christmas trees in the wood-panelled Throne Room, decorated with sparkling ornaments and illuminated with twinkling lights. The room’s fireplace is also dressed with dramatic mantle garlands. In the Great Gallery – the Palace’s longest room and historically the setting for royal balls – a 15-foot Nordmann fir is adorned with glass decorations designed to echo the room’s chandeliers. For the festive season only, visitors are permitted to take photographs in front of the tree, an exception to the usual no-photography rule inside the Palace.
The Royal Dining Room, first used as such by Queen Victoria, features a table set with silverware, sugared fruits and seasonal foliage. Additional festive touches include garlands draped across the stone arches of the Quadrangle and along the Great Stair.
As part of Royal Collection Trust’s commitment to widening access, £1 tickets continue to be available to visitors receiving Universal Credit and other listed benefits. Discounts, including reduced-price tickets for 18–24-year-olds, are also offered. Revenue from admissions and retail purchases supports the care and conservation of the Royal Collection.
Winter Tours and Festive Events
On selected dates in November and December, visitors can take part in exclusive guided tours of the State Apartments after hours, offering a more intimate look at the Palace in its festive setting.
Two evenings of “Carols at the Palace” will take place on 9 and 10 December. Guests will be able to view the decorated State Apartments before enjoying a carol concert in the Great Gallery, followed by wine and mince pies.
A Christmas Activity Day on 13 December will offer family-friendly arts and crafts and a festive musical performance.
