Few places capture the romance of winter quite like the historic estates of the North, but this season, Raby Castle, Park and Gardens is taking its seasonal celebrations to an entirely new level. With iconic heritage, immersive installations, and a star line-up of events, the estate is gearing up for what promises to be its most spellbinding Christmas yet.

Whether you are seeking fireside luxury, hands-on craft sessions, or a magical day out for the family, here is everything to look forward to at Raby Castle this winter.

A First for Four-Legged Family Members

Raby's expansive Deer Park has long been a haven for local dog walkers, but this year the estate is formally extending its festive welcome to man's best friend.

Introducing the Santa-Paws experience: an exclusive opportunity for canine companions to meet Father Christmas inside the cosy Yuletide Yurt. Taking place on Friday 11th December, the event offers a picture-perfect photo opportunity alongside a special doggy treat for your pup to take home for the big day (£7.50 per dog).

As Sophie Brown, sales and events manager at Raby Castle, notes: "Christmas wouldn't be complete without a festive experience for the furry members of the family, and our new Santa-Paws event ensures that no one is left out of the celebrations."

Below Stairs Magic: A New Twist on Castle Heritage

Following a landmark return last year—which saw the castle open its doors during the festive period for the first time in five decades—the Raby Castle at Christmas experience returns from Saturday 14th November with an even grander scope.

For 2026, two brand-new ground-floor rooms have been added to the tour, shedding light on the bustling world of the estate's historic staff:

  • The Servants' Hall: Dressed for a traditional Christmas Day celebration, offering a fascinating glimpse into festive life below stairs.

  • The Historic Kitchen: Transformed by renowned designer Tom Le Bon into an immersive installation showcasing the energy, anticipation, and meticulous preparations behind a grand estate feast.

Complemented by new sensory lighting, state-of-the-art projections, and atmospheric candlelit viewings on selected dates, it promises an unmissable walk through history.

Tickets start from £25 per adult, with early bird code RCC10 available for savvy bookers.

Enchanted Trails and Fireside Tales

For younger visitors, the magic spreads across the entire grounds:

  • Father Christmas at Raby Castle: The flagship sellout event returns from Saturday 21st November through to Christmas Eve, offering intimate family meetings with Santa inside the grand castle walls (from £32 for one adult and one child).

  • Mr and Mrs Claus in the Yuletide Yurt: Running on selected dates between 6th and 20th December (£27.50 for one adult and one child).

  • The Enchanted Forest Trail: Set within The Plotters' Forest adventure playground, this glowing trail winds through the Christmas tree plantation. Available as both a bright daytime stroll or a twinkling dusk experience (from £14 per child).

  • Winter Family Explorer Ticket: For a complete day out, this £70 pass covers access to Raby Castle at Christmas, the daytime forest trail, the Deer Park, and the Gardens for two adults and two children.

Seasonal Workshops and Festive Dining

For those looking to brush up on their holiday entertaining skills, Raby is hosting a series of hands-on masterclasses:

  • Christmas Pudding Masterclass: Kick off the season early on the weekend of 7th–8th November (£37.50 per person).

  • Creative Floristry with Periwinkle Barn: Resident florist Deborah Simpson Boston leads workshops using British foliage to craft luxury wreaths (5th, 6th, 12th, and 13th December; £65 per person), alongside sessions for garlands, door swags, and festive tablescapes.

Foodies can indulge in Festive Afternoon Tea served within the breathtaking, tree-filled Entrance Hall of the castle (paired with a tour, starting at £42), or enjoy sweeping estate views alongside seasonal treats at The Vinery Cafe (from £32.50).

Don't forget to mark your diary for the annual Raby Christmas Market, taking place from 27th to 29th November (£2.50 in advance, £5 on the day), perfect for sourcing unique artisan gifts.

Retreat to High Force Hotel

For the ultimate winter getaway, head deeper into the Raby Estate to the iconic High Force Hotel and Waterfall.

Throughout December, the hotel is offering festive dining (£28 for two courses, £32 for three courses), alongside specialized Twixmas and New Year's Eve breaks.

For an effortless holiday, their Three-Night Christmas Package (24th–27th December) includes luxury accommodation, Christmas Eve dinner, a four-course Christmas Day feast, tickets and transport to the Boxing Day pantomime at Darlington Hippodrome, and full country breakfasts each morning. Best of all? Dog-friendly rooms are available, so your four-legged companion can join the retreat too.
