Suffolk’s newest outdoor attraction has offered a sneak peek inside its gates just days before the official launch.

Guildenacre, an immersive play experience nestled within a gorgeous four-acre woodland on the historic Helmingham Estate, is set to open its grand wooden doors this Saturday, 27 June.

Designed to elevate the estate's visitor experience, this permanent addition is the handiwork of CAP.CO (Creating Adventurous Places), a team of world-class specialists renowned for crafting bespoke adventure playgrounds.

Unlimited Play in Nature

Unlike many modern attractions, Guildenacre is ditching restrictive time slots. Visitors simply need to book an arrival window, after which families are free to stay and explore for as long as they like.

Edward Tollemache, custodian of Helmingham and co-founder of Guildenacre alongside his wife Sophie, explained that the goal was to let families discover the site at their own pace. He noted that each of the four themed zones offers unique play experiences designed to help children create their own adventures and lasting memories.

Taking inspiration from the estate's natural woodland and resident wildlife, the individual play areas encourage young explorers to connect with nature whilst burning off some energy.

Four Zones to Explore
  • Flint’s Hollow: Named after Flint the Badger, this area is packed with tunnels, burrows, two-storey lookouts, and a twisting covered slide.

  • Canopy Keep: High in the trees, Eira the Owl’s realm features rope ladders, elevated wooden walkways, and a giant telescope on a dedicated stargazing deck.

  • The Elderglade: The largest zone on site belongs to Atlas the Stag. It boasts climbing walls, multi-level walkways, bridges, and thrilling twin racing slides.

  • Ember Den: Tailored for older children, Vex the Vixen’s area offers a challenging climbing structure, monkey bars, and balance beams.

The site also features an adrenaline-pumping zip line, a miniature version for toddlers, and various spaces dedicated to imaginative, loose-parts play.

Beyond the physical equipment, the playground incorporates educational elements like den building and the 'Guardian Shield Quest'. These activities are designed to spark curiosity about the local flora and fauna.

Sustainability sat at the heart of the project. The creators opted for a timber-centric design to seamlessly blend into the woods, working closely with CAP.CO to source materials directly from the estate wherever possible.

All four areas are connected by bark pathways, with practical amenities including a refreshment kiosk, rest areas, and toilets scattered throughout.

Community First and Restored Spaces

Local schoolchildren have already given the playground a rigorous test run. Noah Richards, a Year 3 pupil from Stonham Aspal CEVA Primary School, won a recent school design competition and was invited along with his classmates to be the very first to sample the attraction.

The development has also breathed new life into the estate's historic architecture. Visitors can head over to the updated, Grade II listed Wades Barn and its adjacent brick outbuilding. This space now houses a retail area, toilets, and a kitchen run by the popular Suffolk deli group, The Black Dog Deli. A spacious new car park has also been built, which is completely free for both Guildenacre visitors and local walkers.

Ticket and Opening Information

Special introductory prices are running until Monday 31 August. When booked online in advance, tickets cost £11.50 for children aged five and over, £8 for adults, and £6 for children aged three and over. Toddlers under three enter for free.

The estate confirmed that these advanced prices reflect the recent government announcement regarding a temporary VAT reduction for visitor attractions, allowing the savings to be passed directly to families for their debut summer.

Tickets can also be bought on the day at the gate, priced at £13 for older children, £9.50 for adults, and £7.50 for children aged three and over. Separate pricing will apply for seasonal events.

As an added bonus, Guildenacre ticket holders will receive a 25% discount on entry to the famous Helmingham Hall Gardens, located just a two-minute drive or a short ten-minute walk away.

Guildenacre will open for weekends from Saturday 27 June, moving to a daily schedule for the summer holidays from Saturday 18 July until Monday 31 August, before returning to weekend-only opening hours for the autumn.
