Cirque du Soleil’s OVO is a dazzling first big show for kids
WHAT'S ON
Choosing a child’s first major theatre experience can feel like a gamble, but Cirque du Soleil’s OVO makes a compelling case for being the one to beat. Bug-themed, brightly coloured and packed with jaw-dropping acrobatics, it strikes a rare balance between spectacle and child-friendly storytelling.
From the moment audiences step into the Royal Albert Hall, the sense of occasion builds. Once the show begins, the focus shifts to a bustling insect world brought to life through gravity-defying stunts, elaborate costumes and playful humour. Highlights include ants juggling kiwis and a giant spider pedalling across a tightrope while upside down, moments that prompt both gasps and laughter.
Despite the scale of the production, OVO never feels overwhelming for younger viewers. The visuals are clear and expressive, the pacing keeps attention moving, and there is enough whimsy to hold even first-time theatre-goers. Parents often find themselves just as absorbed, impressed by the physical skill and imagination on display.
OVO runs at the Royal Albert Hall from 9 January to 1 March, with tickets starting from £53.93. While it sits at the premium end of family outings, it delivers a memorable introduction to live performance that many children will talk about long after the curtain call.
