Are You Only Applying SPF When It’s Hot? You Might Be Doing More Harm Than You Think
TRAVELSHOPPING & GIFT GUIDES
When the sun finally breaks through the clouds in the UK, it is common to see a rush to grab the sunscreen. However, new research suggests that this reactive approach to sun safety is leaving many of us exposed to long-term skin damage.
A recent study commissioned by renowned aesthetic doctor, Dr. David Jack, surveyed over 2,000 UK adults to uncover our true habits regarding broad-spectrum SPF. The results indicate that while we are becoming more conscious of facial skincare, our bodies are being left behind.
The Seasonal Trap
The most striking finding from the study is that 57% of UK adults admit to only applying SPF to their bodies when the weather is sunny or hot.
This reliance on the forecast as a trigger for sun protection ignores a fundamental truth about skin health: UV damage is cumulative and occurs regardless of the temperature. Even on cloudy days, UVA rays—which are responsible for premature ageing—can penetrate the skin, leading to the gradual degradation of collagen and elastin.
Key Study Findings
The Daily Gap: Only 8% of UK adults wear body SPF every single day.
Face vs. Body: While 36% of adults regularly use SPF on their faces, less than 20% do the same for their bodies.
The Non-Users: 8% of those surveyed stated they never use SPF products at all.
Reapplication Failures: 30% of adults do not follow the essential guidance for reapplying SPF throughout the day.
Why Your Routine Needs a Reset
Dr. David Jack emphasises that many of us are taking a reactive rather than a preventative approach to our skin.
"UV damage accumulates every day, not just during holidays or heatwaves, so SPF should be viewed as a daily health habit rather than a seasonal product," explains Dr. Jack.
Areas like the décolletage, arms and hands are particularly vulnerable to the cumulative effects of daily UV exposure. This damage manifests over time as fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation—signs of premature ageing that are often preventable with consistent protection.
Making SPF a Daily Essential
Despite its importance, the research highlights that only 17% of respondents consider SPF to be the primary product they rely on to prevent premature ageing.
If you are looking to improve your skin health, Dr. Jack’s advice is clear and straightforward: if you do only one thing in your skincare routine, make it a high-factor, broad-spectrum SPF used every day of the year.
By treating sun protection as an everyday essential rather than a holiday accessory, you can better preserve your skin's collagen, elastin and overall resilience for years to come. It is time to stop waiting for the sun to shine before we decide to look after our skin.
