Windsor Castle has opened its doors for the festive season, inviting visitors to experience Christmas in one of the most historic royal residences in the world. From this week, the castle’s grand interiors have been transformed with lavish displays that blend centuries of tradition with a touch of modern sparkle.

The heart of the celebration can be found in St George’s Hall, the castle’s largest and most dramatic space. A magnificent Nordmann fir, soaring to an impressive twenty feet, takes centre stage. Grown in Windsor Great Park, it glitters with more than three thousand lights and an array of green and gold decorations. Elaborate garlands curve along the balconies and highlight the hall’s striking stone ceiling, creating a festive atmosphere fit for a royal gathering.

Nearby, the Crimson Drawing Room offers a more intimate but equally enchanting display. This richly decorated chamber, part of the opulent Semi-State Rooms that open only during the winter months, features a sixteen-foot Christmas tree set against deep red silk walls, ornate gilding and plush furnishings. The result is a warm and sophisticated scene that feels straight out of a storybook.

A delightful surprise awaits in Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House. Within its miniature world stands a perfectly crafted forty-five centimetre Christmas tree adorned with tiny ornaments fashioned from repurposed glass beads. Even the candles on the garlands are made from real candle wax, adding a charming level of detail for visitors who enjoy discovering hidden craftsmanship.

Those seeking a cosy break can visit the Undercroft Café in the oldest part of the castle. A special seasonal menu offers an inviting place to warm up after wandering through the grounds.

This year also introduces a notable new initiative. Visitors who receive Universal Credit and selected other benefits can enjoy the decorations for only £1 per ticket, with up to six tickets available per household. It is a thoughtful effort to ensure more people can share in the castle’s festive magic.

For guests who want an extra glimpse behind the scenes, tours of the storied Great Kitchen, believed to be the oldest working kitchen in the country, will run on selected days throughout the Christmas period. Families visiting during the holidays can also look forward to seasonal activities inspired by Victorian traditions. Children will have the chance to craft a keepsake, while local school and community choirs will fill St George’s Hall with carols on chosen dates.

Proceeds from tickets and purchases help to support the conservation of the Royal Collection, ensuring that its treasures continue to be preserved and enjoyed by people everywhere.

Windsor Castle’s festive display offers a rare blend of heritage, creativity and Christmas charm. For anyone seeking a memorable seasonal day out, it is an experience not to be missed.
