A Halloween woodland adventure that enchants rather than scares
WHAT'S ONTRAVEL

Families looking for a Halloween day out that delights rather than frightens can head to Guildenacre this October, where a woodland treasure hunt, hidden spooky surprises, creepy crafts and a glitter bar are giving the Suffolk adventure playground a seasonal makeover.
Tucked into four acres of woodland on the Helmingham Estate near Ipswich, Guildenacre opened for the first time this year. Its Halloween event, the Night Guild, runs every weekend in October and daily throughout the half term holiday.
Clues, trails and hidden surprises
At the heart of the event is a Halloween Treasure Hunt. Young witches and wizards pick up a trail sheet and gather clues as they make their way around the four play areas, each themed around a different woodland animal and dressed up for the season. Along the way, children can search for six mysterious Halloween installations tucked among the trees.
Edward Tollemache, custodian of Helmingham, who co-founded Guildenacre with his wife Sophie, says the activities have been "designed not to scare but to enchant children", making the event a good fit for younger adventurers who prefer their Halloween on the gentle side.
Plenty of ways to burn off energy
Alongside the trail, there are pedal cars to race around on and a glitter bar where children can add some sparkle with Halloween-inspired designs. The play areas themselves are packed with tunnels, slides, rope ladders, wooden walkways, bridges, monkey bars, balance beams and a zip line, all linked by bark pathways.
The playground was inspired by the estate's natural surroundings, and the idea is that children notice and appreciate the woodland while they run, climb and explore outdoors.
Over at Wades Barn, a Grade II listed building restored by the estate, families will find a range of creepy crafts to try. It is also a good spot for grown-ups to take a breather, with refreshments served from the neighbouring kitchen run by Suffolk deli group The Black Dog Deli. There is also a refreshment kiosk, places to sit and toilets on site.
Dressing up is encouraged
"We know how Halloween can capture the imaginations of children and we'd love to encourage all adventurers to come along in fancy dress," says Edward. Whether your child fancies being a ghost, a vampire, a woodland creature or something entirely their own, the one condition is that costumes and shoes are practical enough for climbing, running and exploring safely.
Planning your visit
The Night Guild takes place on Saturdays and Sundays throughout October, plus every day of half term from Monday 26th to Saturday 31st October. There are two sessions each day, a morning session from 9.30am to 1pm and an afternoon session from 1.30pm to 5pm, giving families time to enjoy the play areas, complete the trail and visit Wades Barn.
Tickets must be booked in advance as they are not sold on the day. Under-threes go free, and parking on site is free too.
